Floating PV Goes Nearshore

On September 23–24, the Summit Forum on Marine Clean Energy Development Technology and Equipment, co-hosted by Sungrow FPV, was held in Ningbo. Dr. Wu Weiwu, Deputy General Manager of Sungrow FPV, delivered a keynote report titled "Discussion on the Development and Key Technologies of Nearshore Floating PV" at the opening ceremony, stating that floating PV technology in inland waters has matured and is now set to expand into broader nearshore areas.



Dr. Wu noted that China's coastline alone stretches over 32,000 kilometers—including 18,000 kilometers of mainland coastline and 14,000 kilometers of island coastline—with maritime waters covering 3 million square kilometers. There are more than 150 bays with an area exceeding 10 square kilometers. Nearshore waters such as tidal flats, bays, cofferdams, and aquaculture farms are expected to become a massive incremental market for floating PV.


Sungrow FPV, in collaboration with domestic and international research institutes and universities, has conducted extensive research and experiments on issues such as high winds and waves, and seawater corrosion faced by nearshore floating PV plants. The company has gradually mastered core technologies including truss-type wave-resistant floating PV systems, floating breakwaters, and corrosion-resistant components. In recent years, it has provided floating system solutions for nearshore floating PV projects in areas such as the coastal waters of the UAE. With the steady progress in formulating the world's first industry standard for floating PV anchoring system design—the "Design Specification for Anchoring Systems of Floating Photovoltaic Power Generation"—authoritative reference standards for anchoring system designs across various application scenarios, including nearshore waters, will soon be available.


Dr. Wu stated that, backed by China's maritime power strategy and carbon neutrality goals, nearshore floating PV will usher in major development opportunities, leveraging its advantages such as no land occupation, high power generation efficiency, environmental friendliness, and strong complementarity. Sungrow FPV will accelerate the development of key equipment such as offshore floating breakwaters, provide low-cost, highly reliable nearshore floating PV system solutions, promote the formulation of relevant standards, and facilitate the larger-scale application of nearshore floating PV systems.
