These days, the Winter Olympics have been dominating everyone's feed.

In the freezing conditions—where temperatures frequently plunge to -40°C—both competition venues and athletes have been equipped with advanced cold-weather technologies.

So, what about floating PV? How does it hold up when the mercury drops?


Installation During Ice Periods – Well-Prepared Solutions



Where ice is thick, local compression and uplift can happen, locking the floating PV system into the ice surface. In extreme cold zones, anchors are usually installed before freezing sets in. However, if installation is required during the freeze, a specific ice-breaking strategy must be applied to clear the ice at the site before work can proceed.


High Snow Load – Flexible Adjustment



Extremely cold regions often come with high snow loads, specialized anchoring material requirements, and relatively slower construction efficiency. As a result, project costs tend to be higher compared to conventional floating PV projects. Therefore, a higher buoyancy-to-weight ratio must be considered during the design phase. The number of floats can be adjusted—increased or decreased—according to local snow load conditions, enabling adjustable buoyancy per unit area and optimizing overall system costs.


Products Built for the Cold – Without Compromising Buoyancy



The cold resistance of the product itself is a key requirement for applications in extremely cold and freezing regions. Sungrow FPV's products can withstand temperatures as low as -45°C. At the same time, the structural design must account for the effects of frost heave, meaning the entire array structure needs to have sufficient strength to withstand freezing, and must undergo a series of freeze tests as well as high- and low-temperature cycle tests for validation. In addition, the selected components must be capable of resisting heavy snow loads and provide adequate safety buoyancy.


The athletes are pushing their limits in the ice and snow, embodying the spirit of "higher, faster, stronger" as they challenge the extremes of human performance.
